President’s Message

Peggi Ann Amstutz

Rik Lewis
61th President
Washington – Alaska Chapter

Greetings from your 2016-2017 Chapter President!

2016-17 President’s Message – Passionate Volunteerism!

17 years ago I joined HFMA and attended my first meeting in May of 1999. I took a cautious approach, having been active in the Washington State Self-Insurer Association, but I was out of my element; I knew some of the HFMA membership from my past work managing workers’ compensation claims for the Washington State Hospital Association, but I was new to healthcare consulting and revenue cycle.

For those that know me, by nature, I am an extrovert; sometimes a little too much energy and passion! Little did I know that the WA/AK HFMA chapter was just what I needed to learn more about healthcare, leadership and equally as important, Passionate Volunteerism! The chapter welcomed me with open arms…and has given me so much! I never aspired to be on the board or become president of the chapter, but unbeknownst to me, chapter leadership led me down that path!

For those of you who are new to the chapter, welcome! Current members that are not very active, please don’t hesitate to get engaged…the path awaits you! Our current and future leadership values your Passionate Volunteerism!

For 2015-16, our chapter was awarded five Yergers at the HFMA Annual National Institute! Yea team!!! Our past-president, Peggi Ann Amstutz was a fantastic leader and will continue to serve the chapter in a variety of roles, including identifying our future leaders for important chapter board and officer positions. Peggi Ann is a tough act to follow…I’ll do my best to make the chapter proud!

Chapter membership satisfaction is job number one and your elected officers and board members considered your feedback from the national survey and will continue to do our best to improve your HFMA chapter. The realities are that the WA/AK chapter is the largest chapter in square miles and the most diverse, making it often difficult to meet the needs of our membership in Alaska and throughout Washington state. We will continue to reach out and provide education in both western and eastern Washington and maintain a strong commitment to our members in Alaska!

With your feedback in mind, your leadership team has made a few changes/additions to programs and expanded our committees to improve your chapter education and networking opportunities. Come join us during the coming year for:

  • 6TH Annual Day with the Mariners at Safeco on August 24
  • Annual trade fair September 21-23, at the Sea-Tac Marriot
  • Alaska Conference and Trade Fair – Anchorage on November 14-15
  • Spring Conference 2017 May 2-4 at Northern Quest Casino in Spokane

Additional programs are being scheduled:

  • Winter conference in February, 2017
  • Roadshows in Washington and Alaska are planned for accounting and revenue cycle
  • Live conference webcasts to support continuing education in remote areas
  • Networking Events designed to engage membership and have fun!

There is still a lot of work to do and we welcome you to show your Passionate Volunteerism! Another of our important initiatives is expansion of our website content and social media engagement. We would value your contribution through blogging and tweeting.

Thank you for the honor to serve the chapter in 2016-17. I’m thankful for the support of HFMA membership, my friends, family, and my employer, HRG and I look forward to a fun and productive year!
